Regina Teixeira de Barros, Senior Curator at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, in Brazil, discusses Tarsila do Amaral’s painting São Paulo, featured in the exhibition Picturing the Americas: Landscape Painting from Tierra del Fuego to the Arctic. De Barros considers the painting in relationship to the Modernist movement in art and its relationship to the increasing urbanization and modernization of cities across the Western Hemisphere during the mid-twentieth century.
