In 1817 the Viennese artist Thomas Ender accompanied the Austrian Mission to Brazil, during which he created sketches of the landscapes they encountered. Vista do Rio de Janeiro was borne of these field sketches and presents a distant view of the city from a lush site across the famed Guanabara Bay. People, animals, and diverse vegetation populate the foreground, while the city is rendered distant by a cool, atmospheric haze.
