During his travels through Venezuela, Ferdinand Bellerman made countless in-situ drawings and small oil sketches of the landscape, which he later used to create larger paintings. La cueva del Guácharo is the product of this practice and conveys the site’s beauty while scientifically describing its various plant species in the manner of the Prussian naturalist, Alexander von Humboldt, whose many publications guided Bellermann’s travels. In Guácharo Cave, the indelible impression the cavern made on the artist still reverberates in this image of grandeur, opulence and sublimity. The artist also painted another two versions of this subject.
