The canvas of Ozias Leduc’s Fin de jour (Day’s End) is consumed almost entirely by a wall of rock. Monumental and intimidating, the canyon wall is interrupted only by a long, slender ladder that cuts through the image. Interested in imbuing the landscape with spiritualism, Leduc depicts, in both literal and metaphorical terms, humankind’s effort in engaging with and exerting control over nature.
