Juan Manuel Blanes was well known for painting scenes of everyday life in his native Uruguay. He was particularly fascinated by gauchos and often depicted these iconic South American cowboy figures against the backdrop of vast plains and a boundless sky. Here, he shows a group of gauchos assisting in the settlement of the expansive pampas, the trademark topographical feature of the Río de la Plata region.
