The fertile lowlands of Uruguay and Argentina have inspired powerful art and literature. In numerous works, Pedro Figari made the pampas his own by painting the region in his signature style on rough cardboard. Here, he places the horizon line low in the composition, emphasizing the pampas’ flatness and openness. But the artist saw this place as both real and imagined: the moon and a herd of wild horses are always present in his depictions, conjuring up the mythical cosmic forces associated with these vast plains.
