In Cañada de Metlac, Velasco captures the change wrought on the Mexican landscape by the introduction of the railroad. In the United States and Canada, the railroad was often seen as a powerful engine for westward expansion, opening up vast areas of wilderness and Native populations to settlement. In Mexico, however, the railway Velasco depicts connected the port of Veracruz with Mexico City and other industrial centers in the country’s interior.
