Carolyn Kastner, Curator at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, discusses Georgia O’Keeffe’s balance of simplification of form with accuracy in reproducing the landscape as seen in her painting Black Mesa Landscape, New Mexico/Out Back of Marie’s II, featured in the exhibition Picturing the Americas: Landscape Painting from Tierra del Fuego to the Arctic. Kastner considers O’Keeffe’s work in relationship to that of other Modernist artists from across the Western Hemisphere featured in the exhibition, and the ways in which they bring similar sensibilities to their representations of very different landscapes.
