Tom Thomson found inspiration in his personal relationship with nature. Illustrating a part of the logging process called “the drive,” in which cut timber is sent down river, the painting reveals Thomson’s longstanding interest in depicting the impact of industry on the land. Here, the artist uses an undeniably modern visual language – rough brush strokes, sharp shading, and gestured figuration—to speak to distinctly modern ecological concerns.
