An innovative painter, Joaquín Clausell produced significant, transitional paintings that have become early modernist masterpieces. Placing the viewer in the midst of the tide as it returns to shore in the afternoon, Clausell masterfully manipulates light and color to convey the weight of the growing clouds above and the oncoming rush of water as it hits the beach. Atardecer en el mar (la ola roja) (Late Afternoon by the Sea [The Red Wave]) eschews the distant grandeur of nineteenth-century painting in favor of a more personal, yet equally powerful, visual language.
